Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are perhaps the two most common type of arthritis affecting the foot and ankle.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic condition involving degeneration of the joint. The ends of the two bones are protected by a smooth cushioning material called cartilage, which absorbs impact and enables the bones to glide smoothly over each other. In OA, the cartilage breaks down due to repetitive stress, excessive pressure, and overuse or misuse of the joint. This is commonly seen in the feet as they are always exposed to these factors.

Abnormal foot alignment and joint positioning would place excessive pressure on our joints, accelerating the onset or process of OA. Signs and symptoms include joint stiffness, joint pain, limited joint movement, bony spur formation, and enlarged joint.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and arthritic changes in the joints. 90% of RA patients have foot involvement, and 20% develop foot symptoms first. Signs and symptoms are similar to OA, but we would normally see more joint swelling and restrictions, outgrowths of bone (osteophytes formation), and foot deformities such as hammer toes, claw toes, hallux valgus, and bunions. These symptoms often prevent patients from exercising, therefore lead to further joint stiffness and muscle weakening. RA patients would also find themselves losing balance due to the toe deformities.

I have no pain, I have no problem…?

Research tells us that only 1/3 of arthritic joints are symptomatic. However, early prevention is always recommended as there is no treatment for arthritis in the feet an ankles and it is a condition that would only get worse over time and eventually cause pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. Pain often happen at the later stage of arthritis. In fact, your joints may already be going through irreversible damage silently without pain.

There is no treatment for ankle arthritis but guess what? We can help maintain your lifestyle!

There are effective conservative treatments we can perform to slow the progress of the disease and relieve symptoms, and ultimately help maintain your lifestyle!

Our treatment aims at getting the joints to function at their optimal position, improving the congruency of the joints help to reduce the wear and tear between the two bones. This is generally achieved by mobilizing the affected joints with our specialized techniques, which stimulate the production of synovial fluid. This fluid lubricates the cartilage and other structures in the joint and keeps it moving smoothly.
